Marine to Receive Medal of Honor

President Bush announced Nov. 10, at the Dedication of the National Mueseum of the Marine Corps, that Cpl. Jason Dunham, who died more than two years ago after covering a grenade with his helmet to save fellow Marines, will receive the Medal of Honor.

Dunham will be the first Marine to receive the award — the nation’s highest award for battlefield heroism — for action in Iraq, and the first leatherneck to earn it since 1970.

Tornado hits Camp Schwab

Tornado hits Camp SchwabRelease number: 06-025November 18, 2006
MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP S.D. BUTLER, OKINAWA, Japan - Around 1:00 p.m. today a tornado stuck the parking lot of the Camp Schwab Post Exchange. Approximately 21 private cars belonging to both Okinawans and Marines were damaged, some severely. The camp post office also received minor damage to one of its doors, in addition to minor damage to an enlisted barracks, the enlisted club, and the camp theater. Three Marines at the exchange at the time also suffered minor injuries, and were taken to the camp medical clinic for treatment.
Less than fifteen minutes after receiving the report of the tornado, the Camp Hansen Provost Marshal’s Office, which is responsible for Camp Schwab, responded alongside members of the fire department, emergency maintenance crews and paramedics. In addition to the vehicles, the exchange parking lot was damaged as well. An electrical transformer was damaged and power lines were knocked down. None of the damage is severe and crews are in the final stages of cleaning up the area. Power has been restored and the camp has resumed normal operations.
